    Thrash Metal!!: Slayer/Testament/Carcass Concert Review

    Hi.

I’m a few days late, but I wanted to post some pics I took at the Slayer/Testament/Carcass show I, my cousin Zachary, and best friend Jamie went to in Columbus, Ohio this past Tuesday.

As Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed loves to say on his podcast The Jasta Show, this show was “haaaaard!!”

This was the 5th time I had seen Slayer and they never disappoint.

Their new album Repentless is one of my favorites.

They played several songs from this album as well as many songs from throughout their 30 plus year career.

This was the first time I saw Testament and Carcass.

I honestly was there just to see Slayer and Testament, but Carcass were very good, also.

    Testament were amazing.

I hope you enjoy the pics below.

    Have a great day everyone.

That Dirty Dirty Lowdown: Boz Scaggs Concert Review

    Hi everyone!

Well, I just got home from my last concert for awhile.

And what a concert it was.
I went to the Keith Albee Theater in Huntington, WV to see one of my favorite singers/guitarists Boz Scaggs.

He was there as part of the Marshall Artist Series.

Boz played for about 90 minutes, had 3 encores, and played many songs from throughout his career.

Some of the songs he played include Jojo, Harbor Lights, Look What You’ve Done To Me (from the movie Urban Cowboy), Lido Shuffle, the amazing song Lowdown, Some Change, What Can I Say, some songs from his latest album A Fool To Care, and more.

He’s been a favorite of mine for some years now, but to be honest, up until this year, I was not familiar with a lot of his work.

For no real reason, one late night early this year, I was on YouTube and I saw his music video “Heart Of Mine”, from his amazing album Other Roads, and I played it over and over that night.

The song may as well be about me because I relate to the lyrics so much.

Soon after that, I bought nearly his entire discography (I still need to buy one studio and one live album) and have become a wayyyy bigger fan of his than I was before.

His voice really speaks to me, and he’s also a great guitar player, too.

He’s been doing this for many years (played guitar for Steve Miller Band before going out on his own) and is still at the top of his game.

He told the audience that this was his first time playing Huntington, and I honestly hope it is not his last.

If you have never heard this man’s music (I’m guessing most have), please do yourself a favor and do it.

And go see him in concert if you get a chance.

I cannot recommend this man’s music enough.

Well, like I said, if all goes right, this will be my last concert for awhile.

It’s been a fun ride for the past 17 years.

Now it’s time to hopefully go be a grown up for awhile.

    But never say never.

You may see another review coming from me someday.

But until then, love and peace to everyone.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this review, as well as all the other reviews I have written, just as much as I have writing them.

    Take care.

Death Metal at it’s Finest: Cannibal Corpse/Cattle Decapitation/Soreption/Empure Concert Review

My cousin Zachary and I went to a Death Metal concert.

We saw headliners Cannibal Corpse, with openers Cattle Decapitation, Soreption, and Empure.

I’m not a huge fan of Death Metal (Zachary loves it), but I respect it.

And Cannibal Corpse is definitely my favorite DM band.

They are the biggest DM band around, and for mainstream audiences, they are known for being in the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

They, along with the openers, all played very loud, solid, kicking sets.

We both had a great time.

I don’t have a lot to see in this review, but I’ll just end by saying it was fun and I’m glad we went.

I Saw a Beatle: Sir Paul McCartney Concert Review

Well, I went to another once in a lifetime concert last night in Columbus, Ohio.

My best friend Jamie McClintic and I saw the one and only Sir Paul McCartney!!!

I have seen many people in concert, but never a Beatle!

He played a 3 hour set with no intermission, playing songs by his band The Beatles (the most important and influential band ever), his band Wings, and lots of solo songs.

The whole show was a highlight, but some of the biggest ones for me was when he brought out his former Beatles band mate George Harrison’s ukulele and played his song Something.

Also, when he played Blackbird, Helter Skelter, Eleanor Rigby, Let It Be, The Long And Winding Road, Band On The Run, All Together Now, Hey Jude, The End.

Heck, every song was a highlight, like I said.

Including the songs from his latest album from 2013, called New.

His band is solid, and he still sings, plays, and looks phenomenal!

He thanked the audience often, and seemed to really be having a ball.

And to show you how fan friendly he is, near the end of the show, he brought some fans onto the stage, talked to them, hugged them, and even signed a woman’s neck, and her husband or boyfriend’s arm.

Another woman came out with a sign asking Paul to announce to the crowd that she is pregnant.

He did and gave her a hug.

    What a class act.

For someone as rich and famous as he is, he did not have to do that.

I honestly cannot find the words right now to explain to you that this was another amazing concert and life experience in general!

If anyone has not seen this man, PLEASE go and see him!!

    He is the best.

Last Time? Motley Crue/Alice Cooper Concert Review

    Hi everyone!!

Well, I went to another fantastic concert last night.
My best friend Jamie McClintic and I went to Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky to see Motley Crue and Alice Cooper!!

This was my 8th time seeing Motley and 4th seeing Alice.

Motley have been on their “Final Tour” for a year and a half, with Alice as their opener.

We had seen them last year on this tour, but since they were so close to home, we figured we better go again.

    And I’m glad we did.

First, I’ll tell you about Alice Cooper.

He has been doing this since the 60s, and believe it or not, he just gets better with age.

He was only able to play for about 45 minutes, but he packed quite a punch in so very few minutes.

He played a very solid hits set with his great band, and had many of his theatrics included throughout the set.

These included him having a python snake, turning into “Frankenstein”, being put in a straight jacket by a crazed nurse (his real life wife, I believe), then escaping it, “choking” her, being “beheaded”, then coming back to life.

Oh and did I say he played many great songs?! Yes I did.

Again, he has so many great songs and albums that it’s impossible to fit them into 45 minutes, even 2 hours.

Having said that, he still packed quite a punch.

If you have never seen Alice Cooper in concert, do yourself a favor and go see him!!

Now to the headliner. My second favorite band of all time Motley Crue!!

Like I said, this was my 8th time seeing Motley, and as usual, they rocked!!

They played many of their hits, and also had some very cool theatrics.

They included Drummer Tommy Lee performing a drum solo on a “roller coaster” (Yes you read that right), Lead Singer Vince Neil and Bassist Nikki Sixx flying around the arena on trusses, and tons of pyro and fire.

At the end of the set, the whole band went to a separate stage for their last song of the night, their classic Home Sweet Home.

It was a very cool moment, as was the whole night.

Vince sang great (Yes you critics. He sang great.), Tommy is a beast on drums as always, Guitarist Mick Mars is a fantastic player, and Nikki Sixx, the leader of the band, is a solid bassist and great songwriter.

I truly hope this is not Motley’s final tour (Their last show is scheduled for New Years Eve.  Edit:  they returned in 2019 to record 4 songs for their biopic The Dirt, and returned to touring 2022, but John 5 replaced Mick in 2023), but if it is, they are truly going out on top as one of the biggest and greatest rock bands of all time.

But if they come back, you can take it to the bank that I will go see them again and again and again.

I love this band so much.

I have many favorite bands and have been fortunate enough to have seen most of them, but this band and their music means more to me than most ever could.

I actually have chills saying this.

Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed this review of another great show I went to.

My next show is tomorrow when I will see for the first time, Sir Paul McCartney!!

So until then, have a great day everyone, and love and peace to you always.

    Lucas

    The Papa: Ghost/Purson Concert Review

The night after we saw Scorpions and Queensryche, my best friend Jamie and I went to see another concert in Columbus, OH.

This time, we saw the band Ghost.

Purson, who I had not heard of, opened the show.

    They were pretty good.

Definitely have to check out their music.

    Afterwards, Ghost took the stage.

They are a band on the rise (edit:  In 2023, they are a very big band.), about to release their 3rd album, which they played a lot of on this night.

I honestly do not know who anyone is in the band (the musicians go by Nameless Ghouls), but the singer is known as Papa Emeritus (edit:  He was later revealed to be Tobias Forge).

Each album/tour he goes by a different Papa (Emeritus II, III, etc.).

I first became aware of them from James Hetfield of Metallica, who mentioned them in an interview.

    They are very different.

Live, they’re quite heavy and loud, almost marching band I would say in tightness.

They get compared to Blue Oyster Cult a lot, which I don’t really hear that, but OK maybe I’m wrong.

Their show is very satanic/gothic I guess, although it’s just for show.

I think they’re very good, but maybe not for everyone.

    Check them out though.

    You may be surprised.

Either way, Jamie and I had fun.

    Ghost Set List:

    1. Spirit
    2. From The Pinnacle  To The Pit
    3. Ritual
    4. Con Clavi Con Dio
    5. Per Aspera ad Inferi
    6. Majesty
    7. Stand By Him
    8. Prime Mover
    9. Body And Blood
    10. Devil Church
    11. Cince
    12. Year Zero
    13. He Is
    14. Absolution
    15. Mummy Dust
    16. Jigolo Har Megiddo (Acoustic)
    17. Ghuleh/Zombie Queen

Rock You Like A Hurricane & Queen of the Reich: Scorpions/Queensryche Concert Review

    Hi everyone!!

Well, I saw two of my favorite bands for the first time in many years last night.

They were the Scorpions and Queensryche!!

I saw them with my best friend Jamie.

Queensryche opened the show with a blistering 45 minute set.

This was my 2nd time seeing Queensryche, but the first time I saw them with their new singer of 3 years Todd LaTorre.

I will forever be a fan of their original singer Geoff Tate, who is doing his own music now, but Todd sounds a lot like Geoff. It’s uncanny.

The band were amazing, as always.

Their new album, Condition Human, is out October 2. They played one song from it at the show, Arrow Of Time.

    Very good song.

Now to the headliner: the Scorpions!!

I had not seen them since 1999, and I swear they are as good or better now as they were then.

Lead Singer Klaus Meine is still amazing and has lost nothing in his voice.

Guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs are just stellar, Bassist Pawel Maciwoda is solid, and Drummer James Kottack is a beast on drums.

They played so many songs from their lengthy catalog, including a medley of some of their 70s songs, plus 4 songs from their great new album Return To Forever, and of course their biggest hits.

They even had an acoustic set, in which they played several of their ballads.

Very cool stuff, and just such a phenomenal show.

They were sooo loud and sooo rocking.

The Scorpions have been around since 1965, but really made their name in the 80s.

Either way, though, they still rock harder than most bands ever could or will.

    Go see the Scorpions!!

The Best: Van Halen Concert Review

    Hi everyone!

Well, as of this writing, I’ve been home for about an hour after seeing the mighty Van Halen in Cincinnati!

If you saw my post earlier, you will know this is the 2nd time I’ve seen Van Halen.

And once again, they did not disappoint.

First, let me get to the opener: the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band.

They were very good, very bluesy, but rocking.

Their bassist, Tony Franklin, was in 2 rock bands that I really like, The Firm (with Paul Rodgers, Jimmy Page, and Chris Slade, whose drumming for AC/DC again now), and Blue Murder (with John Sykes and Carmine Appice).

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is definitely a talented guitarist.

They played for about 50 minutes.

Now, to the reason why I went to this show: Van Halen, one of the greatest rock bands in history.

Most people seem to love to hate David Lee Roth these days.

It seems that nearly everyone I talk to wants Sammy Hagar back in the band.

As cool as that would be, I don’t see it happening anytime soon, if ever.

And I’m okay with that because you know why: I love David Lee Roth in Van Halen.

He has his own style of singing, and regardless of what anyone says, he still has it.

And to be honest, I have always preferred Dave in Van Halen because when he’s in the band, their songs are much more rocking and in your face, which I love.

And they’re just more fun with Dave.
Anyway, Dave is one of my favorite singers/frontmen ever.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang has been the band’s bassist since 2007, and as much as I would love to see their original bassist Michael Anthony there, Wolfgang is a solid player and very good.

Drummer Alex Van Halen, Eddie’s brother, is still a solid, amazing drummer.

And now to the man, the
myth, the legend, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Eddie Van Halen!!

This man is a sight to see and hear play.

He truly is like a mad scientist. And I mean that as a compliment.

His riffs and solos are so innovative, loud, heavy, in your face, and perfect.

Every accolade he gets as a player he deserves and more.

I can go on forever talking about Van Halen, but I’ll end this by saying that Van Halen is one of my favorite bands of all time. Especially with Diamond David Lee Roth on the mic.

And no one is going to change my opinion on that.

I hope you have enjoyed this review.

There will be more to come soon.

I wish the pictures were clearer, but oh well.

I still had a blast, and even though the pics are not perfect, I really did have a great view.

What a Night: Def Leppard/Styx/Tesla Concert Review

I went to another fantastic concert Monday night in Cincinnati.

I saw Def Leppard for the 4th time, and openers Styx and Tesla, for the 1st time.

    All 3 bands were fantastic!!

I’ll post pics of all 3 bands at the end, but first, some of my thoughts on the show.

Tesla started the show with a rocking set of songs. They only had about 45 minutes to play, but they truly let the music do the talking, if you will.

One of their guitarists, Frank Hannon, even has the same last name as me, which I think is cool. I doubt he’s a relative, but who knows.

If you have never seen Tesla in concert, or by some chance have never heard them, I recommend checking them out. They rock!!

    Styx played next.

Like Tesla, I had never seen Styx in concert, but have been a fan for many years.

    They did not disappoint.

My only complaint about Styx is that I wish singer/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung was still with them.

But having said that, singers/guitarists Tommy Shaw and James “JY” Young are still in the band and they still rock.

The highlight of their show, for me, was when their original bassist Chuck Panozzo came out and played with them for a few songs.

He has had HIV for many years, and does not play full time with them anymore.

But when he does, it’s even extra special.

They played many of their hits, but my favorite was the song “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man). I’ve always related to the lyrics.

Anyway, they played and sang great.

And again, if you have never seen Styx live or by some chance you’ve never heard their music, check them out. If you have, check them out again.

Now if that was not enough of a rock show, the best were left until the end: Def Leppard!!!!

Like I said earlier in this post, this was my 4th time seeing Def Leppard, and I hope it’s not my last.

I think they’ve always been great on album, but they’re sooo much better live.

Live, they are more raw, and in your face, which I like a lot.

They have so many hits, but even in about 90 minutes, they play a lot of them, but also play more album tracks, too.

I can’t say enough good about them.

Lead singer Joe Elliott is still an amazing singer/frontman, guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell are fantastic, bassist Rick Savage is a solid player, and drummer Rick Allen is a sight to behold, as a player.

To only have one arm and still be able to play drums, is truly amazing to me.

And the fact they have always been loyal to him is even more amazing.

    Anyway, such a great concert.

Three great bands, so many hits amongst all of them, and just a great night of fun.

Here I Go Again: Whitesnake Concert Review

Well, I went to another concert again last night.

I, along with my best friend Jamie McClintic went to see the rock band Whitesnake in Huber Heights, Ohio.

This was the 2nd time I saw Whitesnake singer David Coverdale and his great band in concert.

And other than a brief sound problem in the middle of the opening song, it was another fun show.

And a fun way to spend an evening.

Whitesnake are on tour to support their great new CD/DVD called The Purple Album, which are re-records of songs from David Coverdale’s era of the legendary rock band Deep Purple, from the 70s.

They played 5 of these great songs last night (I’ll list the setlist at the end of this review.)

Plus, they played many of their most popular songs, as well as some guitar and drum solos, too.

David Coverdale, to be in his early to mid 60s, still has a strong voice, and he gives it everything he has.

He is one of my favorite singers.

His band, which over the years has had many members in and out, now includes Reb Beach on guitar.

Reb also plays in a band from the 80s called Winger, who I know have been given much flack over the years.

But in my opinion, I think Winger are great.

    Especially their more recent albums.

Also in Whitesnake now is Joel Hoekstra on guitar, Michael Devin on bass, Michelle Lupi on keyboards, and one of the greatest drummers of all time, and who has been in and out of Whitesnake over the years, the one and only Tommy Aldridge.

Again, fun show, great songs, great band, and in my opinion, one of the best singers ever, David Coverdale, still rocking out and entertaining people better than most people ever could.

If anyone has not yet seen Whitesnake in concert, or by some chance has never heard much or any of their music, which I’m sure many have, then I strongly recommend checking them out.

As well as anything/everything David Coverdale has done throughout the years.

From Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Coverdale/Page, solo albums, everything. David Coverdale is the man!!

I hope you enjoyed this review.

    Whitesnake Set List:

    1. Burn
    2. Slide It In
