Seeing Metallica and Godsmack for the 1st Time
- Date of Concert: April 28, 2004
- Location of Concert: Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY
My brother Christopher and I went to see Metallica, with Godsmack opening, in Louisville, KY, which is about 3 hours from where we live.
Godsmack opened with a rocking set.
I’ve been a fan of theirs since their first album was released in 1998.
Singer Sully Erna, Guitarist Tony Rombola, Bassist Robbie Merrill, and Drummer Shannon Larkin are always solid as a rock.
As I type this in 2023, I’ve seen them 3 times and they’re one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen.
The albums have always been consistently good too.
I can’t say enough about them.
But the main event was coming up: Metallica!!
I was late to them, becoming a fan in 1998, but have now been a fan for 25 years.
I love most of their albums, and even the ones I don’t love I really like.
Strangely, though, this has been the only time I’ve ever seen them.
It’s not been a lack of desire. I’ve just been busy seeing so many other shows.
But that’s OK.
This was a great show.
Metallica played a lot of songs from almost every album they had released up to this point (St. Anger was the latest at the time. A lot of people don’t like this album, but I love it).
Singer/Guitarist James Hetfield, Drummer Lars Ulrich, Guitarist Kirk Hammett, and then new Bassist Robert Trujillo (in the band 20 years as I type this) are one of the best live bands around.
Regardless of what you think about them on album, they always deliver in concert.
So tight, well rehearsed, and they always give you bang for your buck.
They’re one of the biggest bands ever.
I’ll always be a fan.
Metallica Set List:
- Blackened
- Fuel
- For Whom The Bell Tolls
- Kirk Guitar Doodle 1
- Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

A Heavy Triple Bill: Iron Maiden/Dio/Motorhead Concert Review
- Date of Concert: August 9, 2003
- Location of Concert: Germain Amphitheater in Columbus, OH
Wow what a bill this was.
Iron Maiden, Dio, and Motorhead all in one night.
Motorhead started it off with a set Motorhead only does.
Straight up, hard and fast, rock and roll.
Singer/Bassist Lemmy Kilmister was one of a kind (he sadly passed away in 2015).
He had Phil Campbell on Guitar and Mikkey Dee on Drums.
Phenomenal band. Made lots of great albums with various lineups, but I’m especially partial to the albums with this lineup.
God Bless Lemmy and long live his music.
Dio, the band fronted by namesake Ronnie James Dio, was the middle band that played.
His band at the time consisted of himself on lead vocals, guitarist Craig Goldy, bassist Jimmy Bain, drummer Simon Wright, and keyboardist Scott Warren.
As I type this in 2023, I’ve been a fan of his since 2000 when I first saw him on The Black Sabbath Story Volume 2 VHS tape (he was one of many singers in Black Sabbath, including one more time later on).
The first album I bought of his was a Sabbath album called Dehumanizer. I still love it and all the stuff he did Sabbath, later known as Heaven And Hell for his lineup.
But the first Dio band album I bought was Magica. PHENOMENAL album.
On this tour, Dio were still promoting their Killing The Dragon album, in which they played a couple of songs from this album at the show, along with Sabbath classics and Rainbow classics (Rainbow was another band Ronnie was in.).
I’m sooooooo glad I saw Ronnie not only here but a few years later with Sabbath.
I actually even got to speak to Ronnie once on a radio call in show in 2009.
He actually called me “buddy”. I’ll never forget it.
He sadly passed away in 2010.
But anyway, Ronnie was always great and he certainly was at this show.
I miss him forever.
If this show wasn’t already great, it was still just getting started because the MIGHTY Iron Maiden closed the show.
I’ve been a fan of this band since 2000 (yeah I was late to them) when I saw their video The Wicker Man (from their PHENOMENAL 2000 album Brave New World) on VH1’s Rock Show.
They’re always great and as usual, they were on this night too.
Lots of songs from throughout their career, including one new song from their upcoming album at the time, Dance Of Death.
Singer Bruce Dickinson, like Ronnie James Dio, is one of the greatest singers ever, in my opinion.
And one of the best frontmen too.
He always has the crowd in the palm of his hand.
Bassist Steve Harris has always been phenomenal. Not only as a musician, but as a songwriter. Everyone writes in the band, but this band has always been his baby.
Guitarists Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, and Janick Gers, all are excellent guitarists.
And Drummer Nicko McBrain is one of the best drummers.
I can’t say enough about this show.
It will always be a special one.
Up the Irons, as they say.
Iron Maiden Set List:
- The Number Of The Beast
- The Trooper
- Die With Your Boots On
- Revelations

I Saw The Doobie Brothers for Free!!
- Date of Concert: July 3, 2003
- Location of Concert: Ashland, KY
I got to see The Doobie Brothers for free!!
They played at Summer Motion, an annual 4th of July week event, in Ashland, KY.
They’re pretty good at getting national acts and this was definitely a big one, in my opinion.
As I type this in 2023, I don’t remember all of the set list, but I know they played a lot of their hits, and classic members Tom Johnston (Vocals/Guitar), Pat Simmons (Vocals/Guitar) and Keith Knudsen (Drums-RIP) along with all their other guys kicked some butt.
I wish I had more to say about this show, other than I enjoyed it.
But I’ll just end by saying they’re one of my favorite bands and I’m so glad I got to see them at home basically.

Prog Metal Trio: Queensryche/Dream Theater/Fates Warning Concert Review
- Date of Concert: July 2, 2003
- Location of Concert: LC Pavilion in Columbus, OH
My brother Christopher and I went to see three bands in one night.
Fates Warning started off with a very cool set of tunes.
I was a little bit aware of them before this, but not much.
Although their bassist, Joey Vera, I know from being in Armored Saint, who I really like a lot.
I still need to check out more Fates Warning stuff.
Then Dream Theater played and WOW they were mind blowing.
Again, I knew of them, but not much.
As of 2023 as I type this, I’ve seen them once more and have most of their albums. Great band.
But the main reason why we were here, or I was anyway, was to see Queensryche.
I saw singer Geoff Tate and the band on VH1’s Rock Show a few times, and I really was in love with their music by this time.
They were about to come out with the album Tribe, which I really love.
They played a couple of songs off it, plus a lot of other songs spanning their at this point 22 year career.
During Queensryche’s encore, the coolest thing happened: Dream Theater came back on stage and played the encore with Queensryche. They played one QR song, and one DT song.
AWESOME!!!!
I’m so glad we were able to see this show.

SLAYYYYYYYEEEERRR!!: Slayer Concert Review
- Date of Concert: August 21, 2002
- Location of Concert: Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH
My brother and I saw Slayer for the first time a few weeks after we saw Tool and Tomahawk.
This was the second time I had been to the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH. It was initially supposed to be at the Promowest Pavilion, but was moved to Newport. I don’t remember why, but I’m sure it had something to do with ticket sales or Promowest wasn’t available that night.
It does not look like much on the outside, but the venue is really cool and has been around for decades.
Soooooo many have played and do play there.
We did not see any of the opening acts (I don’t even know who they were), but we were only there to see Slayer anyways.
The band (consisting of Singer/Bassist Tom Araya and Guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman) had just brought back original drummer Dave Lombardo to play with them for the first time in 10 years. It was great seeing him back with them.
Slayer is definitely not for everyone, but for me, they are one of the best, if not the best, at what they do.
They’re mostly consistent on album and they blow most bands away in concert.
I think of them as like AC/DC, in terms of know what you’re going to get with them.
They’re sooooo heavy. Sooooo loud. They’re awesome.
This was such an awesome show.
My brother and I had a great time.
Set List:
- Intro Tape: Darkness Of Christ
- Disciple (New Song)

A Weird But Good Show: Tool/Tomahawk Concert
- Date of Concert: August 8, 2002
- Location of Concert: Huntington Civic Center in Huntington, WV
My brother and I went to see Tool in concert 20 minutes from where we live.
The show itself was mostly very good, but some strange things happened too.
First, when security checked us, we were told us to empty of pockets of change. We were not allowed to have change in our pockets. I was emptying mine out, stupidly, but then I was told no it was fine. This was STUPID!!!!!!!
I also noticed no news crews were allowed in to film any of the show for their newscasts later on in the evening.
Maybe this is not strange but I thought it was.
Anyway, we were finally allowed in and the show started off with Tomahawk playing.
Tomahawk is one of the bands fronted by Mike Patton, whos is also the singer of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle.
I guess the crowd were just hardcore Tool fans because they gave Tomahawk a lot of flak during their set. Mike yelled back at the crowd but I guess they wanted Tool.
It was disappointing seeing this happen, but I’m glad I at least saw Mike because who knows if I’ll ever get to see Faith No More, who I am a fan of.
Tool put on a very visual, loud, rocking show.
However, singer Maynard James Keenan kept his back to the crowd the entire performance.
I heard later maybe he did this because he was offended that the crowd gave Mike and Tomahawk so much flak.
Or he was just being strange, which he seems to have a rep for.
However, he sang well and the band (consisting of Guitarist Adam Jones, Bassist Justin Chancellor and Drummer Danny Carey) kicked butt.
And they returned the favor to Mike by inviting him out for one of their songs near the end of their set.
Pretty cool.
Definitely the strangest show I’ve ever been to, but nevertheless, we mostly had fun.
Tool Set List:
- Sober
- The Grudge
- Stinkfest
- H.
- Schism
- Parabola
- AEnema
- Disposition
- Reflection
- Triad (w/Mike Patton)
- Lateralus

My family went to Summer Motion, which is an annual summer event by the Ohio River, in Ashland, KY near where we live, to see The Beach Boys.

They still sing very well, have a great band backing them, and of course the songs are timeless.

Fun time.

Operation: Enduring Metal-Judas Priest/Anthrax Concert Review
- Date of Concert: February 10, 2002
- Location of Concert: Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH
During the winter of 2002, I saw Judas Priest and Anthrax for the first time.
This was supposed to happen October 6 of 2001, but due to the terrorist attacks on September 11th, this tour got postponed.
My memories of this show are waiting outside in the cold waiting to get into the venue. Anthrax Drummer Charlie Benante actually walked around and I said Hi to him. He had a bodyguard with him and was trying to be incognito so I think he mumbled “how are you doing” to me and kept on walking, which was fine.
He and his band Anthrax kicked major butt that night.
This was still some months after the Anthrax scare that was going on in America, so Singer John Bush at one point said to the crowd “we are the real Anthrax Columbus, Ohio!!!”. Pretty cool.
John actually went out into the crowd at one point.
I’ve been a fan of the band since 1999 when Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian started hosting VH1’s Rock Show and watching Anthrax videos on that show.
The band at this time included John, Charlie, and Scott, newcomer at the time Rob Caggiano on Lead Guitar, and Bassist Frank Bello.
I’m glad I was able to see them at this, especially with John Bush on vocals (Singer Joey Belladonna later rejoined a few times and is still their singer as of 2023.).
Then Judas Priest played.
Again, they are one of my favorite bands (arguably the second ever heavy metal band in existence) and they were touring on their Demolition album at the time.
Tim “Ripper” Owens was still the singer at this time (He replaced Rob Halford in 1996. Halford rejoined in 2003.) and he was/is phenomenal.
I still love the albums he did with the band (Jugulator, Demolition, and two double live albums 98 Live Meltdown and Live In London).
Very heavy.
Guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing are in my view the best guitar duo of all time.
Bassist Ian Hill and Drummer Scott Travis are always solid as a rock.
This show was very LOUD!!! Still one of the loudest shows I’ve ever seen.
I unfortunately had to leave about halfway through Priest’s set, but I loved what I saw.
I’m glad Rob Halford rejoined, but Tim is the real deal, and in 2023, he is working with K.K. again as part of the band KK’s Priest. Good stuff.
Oh and Iced Earth were listed on the ticket as the openers but they did not.

My 7th Concert: Aerosmith/Fuel Concert Review
- Date of Concert: July 11, 2001
- Location of Concert: Polaris Amphitheater in Columbus, OH
- Opener: Fuel
Aerosmith is one of my favorite bands ever.
I basically love all of their albums, especially the 70s ones, but the later ones are great too.
In fact, I started being a fan after hearing their 1997 song Pink, from their Nine Lives album, in cooking class in high school.
That started my fandom of Aerosmith. Great place to start.
This was my first time seeing them in concert.
They were on their Just Push Play album tour.
I did not love that album immediately, but it grew on me very quickly, and I played it a lot after it was released and still really like it.
Fuel opened.
They were on their second album at the time called Something Like Human.
There was a show on VH1 at the time called Rock Show, and they used to play Fuel’s videos, particularly Jesus Or A Gun, from their first album Sunburn.
I really liked them and still do.
It was great seeing them open the show.
Aerosmith played 5 songs from Just Push Play, as well as a lot of their songs throughout their history.
Aerosmith has such a discography that they can skip over hits (they have so many, see set list below) in a show, and yet, still give you a full, amazing show.
Steven Tyler is phenomenal as a vocalist and has a lot of energy.
Joe Perry and Brad Whitford are a phenomenal guitar team. Joe gets most of the attention, but Brad deserves just as much attention.
Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer are a phenomenal rhythm section. Again, Steven and Joe get most of the attention in this band, but all the guys carry their weight and really are a band.
I’m so glad I got to see them on this tour.
They actually had a b-stage out on the lawn of the amphitheater.
They played three songs on that stage.
My seat was way in the back, so I was closer to the b-stage.
Either way, I had a good view throughout, even though the pictures below are not great.
This was in the days of using disposable cameras, and there is a reflection of me taking a screen shot of them on my phone to put onto this website, but hey, it’s ok.
I feel like I should be saying more here, but this is what’s on my mind as I type this.
I’ve loved Aerosmith now for 25 years and I always will.
Since this show, I have seen them two more times. I’ve seen Brad with Derek St. Holmes (Whitford/St. Holmes) and met him and Derek. And I’ve seen Joe with his own band The Joe Perry Project.
Just awesome talents, all of them, and they’ll always be in my top 5 or top 10 favorite bands of all time.
Aerosmith Band Members:
- Steven Tyler (Lead Vocals)
- Joe Perry (Lead and Rhythm Guitar/Vocals)
- Brad Whitford (Lead and Rhythm Guitar)

My 6th Concert and It Was Free: Lynyrd Skynyrd/Deep Purple/Ted Nugent Review
- Date of Concert: June 30, 2001
- Location of Concert: Polaris Amphitheater in Columbus, OH
My 6th concert ever was actually free.
My Mom had a friend that she worked with that was very good at winning concert tickets by calling into radio stations.
Well, she won two tickets to see Lynyrd Skynyrd/Deep Purple/Ted Nugent, but could not use them.
So, she gave them to my Mom to give to me and a friend so that we could go.
Wow what a surprise and present.
We traveled on a bus with other ticket winners to the show.
I remember playing these guys’ CDs on the way their on my CD walkman.
We got parked and got off the bus right when Ted Nugent was starting.
Even though we weren’t inside the venue yet (we had the lawn section in the back but still a good view) we could hear Ted, but it did not take us long to walk into the venue and get situated.
We were right on the edge of the lawn, so we were as close as we could be without having actual seats.
Ted was great as always.
His band was him on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Marco Mendoza on Bass and occasional Lead Vocals, and at the time, a newcomer to me on drums, Tommy Clufetos.
He played drums for Ted for a few years, then was in Rob Zombie’s Band, as well as Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Dead Daisies, even Motley Crue for a couple of shows when Tommy Lee could not play. Quite the resume and phenomenal talent.
Anyway, Ted is not for everyone. He is very outspoken and passionate about what he’s passionate about.
But musically, he’s always been awesome, in my opinion.
This day was no different. He was promoting a live album, Full Bluntal Nugity, at the time. Phenomenal live album.
I’ve seen Ted 3 times (once before this in 2000, this time, and once in 2023). He always delivers.
Next up was Deep Purple. WOW!!!!!!
For me, they stole the show.
The band was all of their famous MK2 lineup, except for the guitarist (Ritchie Blackmore left in late 1993, and Steve Morse came in the following year and stayed there until 2023.)
Keyboardist/Organist Jon Lord (R.I.P., he died in 2012) was still in the band at this point (he left in 2002 because he didn’t want to be on the road so much), so I got lucky and saw him. PHENOMENAL talent.
Drummer Ian Paice, to me, is one of the best drummers of all time. He’s the one member of Deep Purple that has ALWAYS been there.
Bassist Roger Glover has always been solid and is a great producer/songwriter.
And Singer Ian Gillan is a master. What can I say? He’s always been great. He doesn’t do all the high screams he’s known for as much anymore, but he still sings great.
I’ve seen them a few more times since this, and they always deliver.
They still make great albums too. Please do yourself a favor and seek out their music, if you haven’t already.
Then Lynyrd Skynyrd closed the show.
In 2023, they really are just a great tribute band (almost all of the classic and original members are dead), but in 2001, I was able to see a few of the classic guys: Guitarist Gary Rossington (who passed away in 2023), Bassist Leon Wilkeson (who passed away less than a month, July 27, after this concert actually), and pianist Billy Powell (who passed away in 2009).
Sadly, one of their other guitarist at this time, Hughie Thomasson, passed away later in 2007.
Anyway, sorry I’m saying all this sad stuff first. Back to the happy stuff.
The band was awesome. Johnnie Van Zant, Ronnie’s brother, sings the songs so well.
Guitarists Rossington, Thomasson, and Rickey Medlocke, are a heck of a guitar trio.
Everyone just played great, and the songs, my gosh. Such a great catalog of music.
Sadly, I don’t remember all of the songs everyone played (Ted played a lot of his hits and played a lot from the Full Bluntal Nugity album, while Skynyrd one of their newer songs called Workin’, as well as a ton of their hits) but I do have Deep Purple’s set list, which I will list below.
This was a very fun show at a now long gone venue, Polaris Amphitheater. It was later renamed Germain Amphitheater, and eventually shut down, and is now just gone and an empty field. Shame because everyone played there.
I hope you enjoyed reading this.
I’m only posting one picture of Deep Purple, and it’s a terrible quality picture, but it’s what it was at the time.
But trust me, the experience was not terrible. It was incredible.
